Wednesday, May 14th 2003 2:55 PMSpam Prevention:
Many of you noticed a large increase in the amount of Unsolicted Email(SPAM) you received in the last week. One of our Spam-Prevention mechanisms stopped working, and caused the increase. Problem was found and fixed today, along with adding an additional Prevention mechanism.

Currently All Email Being sent to Rangenet takes the following course:
1) It is checked against a list of domains that Rangenet lists as being completely spammers and blocks these. (emailfactory.com, hotoffers.com, etc..) We constantly add to this list as we receive spam from clear spammers.
2) The Sender is checked against a list of mailservers that are being abused, and have spam being sent through them.
3) The Sender is checked against another list of more misconfigured servers/non-mailservers/etc..

Finally if the mail gets through all of these checks(about 80% of spam is already caught up to here), it is sent through your personal Rangenet spam filter if you have one configured.

Now that all of these systems are working properly again, the level of Spam should drop back down significantly.

Thank you!
Rangenet Team
