|Thursday, January 18th 2007 5:23 PM||Spam Blocking Improvements:|
We've been hard at work the last few weeks overhauling our entire spam filtering system.
Undoubtedly, many of you have noticed a dramatic decrease in the amount of junk mail coming into your mailbox (even if you don't have our "spam filter" turned on).
We've been getting a lot of people asking "Where's all my mail? Is something broken?"
Quite the opposite actually. Our mail server is working great!
The reason for this is a new mail delivery technique we have deployed known as "greylisting". This extremely effective method works by delaying the first message received from any particular server and email address. It tells the sending server to "please come back later". After the 59 minute quarantine is up, the sender is added to a database of known "good" senders. Any future emails are delivered without delay.
Why is this so effective?
Because most spammers will run their list once, and then that's it. If they get any bounces or temporary retries, they don't attempt re-delivery. All REAL servers on the internet will attempt to re-send a message for 3-5 days. So a 1 hour delay is really small potatoes.
Because we can do this at the server-level, we don't have to resort to sometimes error-prone rule-based filtering techniques. (Translation: Even if you have your filter "off" because you're worried about it catching legitimate email...you're still taking advantage of what we've done here because there's no "filter".
We have also deployed a virus-filtering system, which will automatically reject emails that contain a known virus. (Please note that this service is not a substitute for running your own anti-virus on your computer.)
If you have any questions or concerns about how this works, please send an email to:
(We prefer email instead of calling, if possible.)
As always, we thank you for your business!
